Welcome To Nankana Sahib

This is one of the holiest sites in Sikhism as it marks the birthplace of Guru Nanak Dev Ji. The city itself is named after him (formerly known as Talwandi). It is a large complex that forms the heart of the city. A major annual pilgrimage occurs here during Guru Nanak’s birth anniversary (Gurpurb).Gurdwara Janam Asthan, also revered as Nankana Sahib, is the absolute holiest religious site in Sikhism. It marks the birthplace of the founder of the faith, Guru Nanak Dev Ji, who was born here on April 15, 1469. Located in the city of Nankana Sahib in present-day Pakistan’s Punjab province, this Gurdwara is not just a building but the very ground where Sikhism began. The city itself derives its name from the Guru, meaning “the home of Nanak.”

Birthplace of Guru Nanak

The site’s history is marked by both deep devotion and profound sacrifice. In the 20th century, it was the scene of the Saka Nankana, where a group of peaceful Sikh protesters were martyred while protesting against the corrupt Mahants (custodians) of the Gurdwara. This event was a pivotal moment that led to the Gurdwara Reform Movement, ultimately returning the management of all historical Gurdwaras to the Sikh community through the Shiromani Gurdwara Parbandhak Committee (SGPC)
